Double Image Theater Lab is based in New York City and was founded by Spica Wobbe and Margot Fitzsimmons in 2011.

Spica Wobbe ( 鄭淑芸 Shu-yun Cheng) , co-founder
Spica is a puppetry artist originally from Taiwan. She has worked and studied with master puppeteers Albrecht Roser, Norbert Goetz (Germany), Damiet van Dalsum (Holland), Suratno S. Kar (Indonesia), Peter Schumann and Ralph Lee (U.S.). Her work has been seen in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Holland, Germany, Israel, and Austria. Now based in NYC, she works as a puppetry artist and teaching artist since she received her M.A. in Educational Theater from New York University in 2003. |
Margot Fitzsimmons , co-founder Margot is a puppetry artist in NYC. Her work has been seen in Holland, Israel, Taiwan and Austria. She has studied with master puppeteers Ralph Lee, Landis Smith (U.S.), Diego Guzman (Spain) and Norbert Goetz (Germany). She works as a teaching artist for The New Victory Theatre, American Place Theatre, and Acting Manitou Theatre Camp where she serves as a puppet choreographer, teaching artist, producer and builder for their summer shows. Margot has taught various subjects using active learning methods. Some of her favorite locations have been Virginia working with migrant workers and their families and Uganda where she worked with Invisible Children Teacher Exchange working with youth and teachers. She is a collaborating artist with A Space Between Theater, Trusty Sidekick and Spellbound Theatre. She received a B.A. in Theater and Spanish (Dickinson College, 2004) and M.A. in Educational Theater in Colleges and Communities (NYU, 2007). |

Nancy Smithner, Ph.D., (Director) is a professor in the Program in Educational Theatre at NYU. As an international scholar, she has taught at Incheon Catholic and Soongsil Universities in Korea; Ping Tung and Shu-Te Universities in Taiwan, and Trinity College in Ireland. She also directed Double Image Theater’s I Laid an Egg and A Chance Shadow, and specializes in experimenta theater and the devising of original performance works. She is an applied theater practitioner teaching in medium and maximum security prisons.

Yukio Tsuji (Composer, Shakuhachi player, Percussionist ) has been working as a composer and as a performer with Estelle Parsons, Ellen Stewart, Late Jerome Robins, Jullie Taymour, Sir Peter Hall, Late John Dexter, Andre Serban, Elizabeth Swados and many other major theater directors. He has been the house composer / musician at Lamama ETC for over twenty years, and he performed on Ellen Stewart's famous "MEDEA", "ELECTRA" "TROJAN WOMEN" "SEVEN" and countless numbers of productions over the years. He composed more than twenty hours of music for Kei Takei's "Moving Earth" Dance Company alone. He composed and performed on Broadway production “SALOME“ with Al Pacino, directed by Estelle Parsons, Two more productions with Al Pacino "OEDIPUS" and "FATHER", "MACBETH", "NIGHT OVER TAOS" also directed by Estelle Parsons. Co-arranged and performed on Broadway Production “M.BUTERFLY”, Composed and performed on the title music of the movie “YEAR OF THE DRAGON". "TRANSPOSED HEAD" directed by Julie Taymor, 9 Acts Production “ TANTALAS “ directed by Sir Peter Hall with Royal Shakespeare Company. "WATERMIL"Directed by Jerome Robins with New York City Ballet.

Margaret Yuen (Performer) is a dancer, instructor, choreographer and founder of the Red Silk Dancers. Her journey in puppetry theatre began in 2016 where she took the first workshop hosted by LaMaMa. Since then, Ms. Yuen has presented several original puppetry works under the guidance of Federico Restrepo and has collaborated and performed with Spica Wobbe in the past three years.

Driftwood Fire (composer, musician) is a rarity in today’s media mad world — an organically creative female duo whose vivid songwriting and prodigious playing skills display uncommon artistry. Striking for their balance of variety and seamlessness, and for exceptional storytelling, the duo's captivating live performances have propelled them to the stages of the National Women’s Music Festival, the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest,Falcon Ridge Emerging Artists showcase and Far-West Folk Alliance Premier showcases. As well as winning them Suggested Artists status in VH-1’s Song of the Year contest, first place in this year's Merle Fest Chris Austin Songwriting contest, first place in the International Narrative Song Contest, and an Honorable Mention at the Telluride Troubadour Contest. “We love writing and performing and want to give people an experience that slows down time a bit and encourages them to sit back and catch their breath” says Scharf, “and maybe find a part of themselves in this music, like we did.”

Karen Oughtred (Teaching Artist) is an educator and theater artist who has introduced, taught and developed Process Drama programs, mask and puppetry workshops for a wide variety of populations including museum visitors, disadvantaged youth, the disabled, seniors, gifted and talented and indigenous peoples. At the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden she directed Fare For Alland co-wrote, directs and performs in the outreach program, People of our Past, which is delivered to numerous senior centers across the 5 boroughs. She directs Jay Heritage Center’s, Rye, interactive museum theatre, Striving For Freedom.
She was Founder and Artistic Director of the Australian Aboriginal Theatre Iniative (2003-2011), a not for profit theatre company. which produced annual festivals featuring over 100 indigenous artists from Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Canada and the USA. Producer and Co-Director of the US premiere of Yanagai! Yanagai! (La MaMa Etc., 2009). She has produced national and local tours for a variety of New York theatre and dance companies and works as Production Stage Manager for a variety of theatre, dance and puppetry companies in New York, including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and Hotel Savant (NY). Puppetry credits include: Co-Curator Voice4Vision International Puppetry Festival, NY, The Dream Community: teaching artist, (Taipei, Taiwan), IsleWilde: teaching artist, (Vashon Island, WA), Bread and Puppet Theater: performer (NY, Glover, VT, Canada) and Chinese Theatre Works: performer (Virginia, NY), Mary Seidman & Dancers: puppetry construction (NY), collaborated with independent puppetry artist, Spica Wobbe (9th International Toy Theater Festival, St. Ann's Warehouse, and Puppet Playlist, Tank). She has delivered mask-making workshops in Australia and NY and created the mask for Harvest Ceremony, NMAI. Karen is a qualified and experienced teacher of English and Drama for middle to high school students and teaches ESL to adults. She is a graduate of New Actors Workshop (Mike Nichols, Paul Sills, George Morrison) and gained her MA in Theater from Antioch University. |
